Faculty (Asst. Professor in Dept. of Soil, Water, & Env Sciences) Tribe: Navajo Dr. Chief (Diné) is an Assistant Professor and specialist in the Department of Soil, Water, and Environmental Sciences at the University of Arizona (UA). Dr. Chief is the faculty advisor for UA AISES. The goal of Dr. Chief’s research is to improve the understanding and prediction of water flow through unsaturated soils and watersheds. Dr. Chief works to improve tools to support water management and decision-making and further understand how natural and human disturbances may affect watersheds such as climate change and fire. Dr. Chief also works on how climate change will impact Indigenous communities. By working with other hydrologists and social scientists, Dr. Chief works to identify and mitigate environmental risks to vulnerable populations. Dr. Chief is an advocate for Indigenous communities and works to bring relevant science to Native American communities in a culturally sensitive manner. |
